Yesterday Lindsey competed in a school spelling bee. Her sister Emma won the spelling bee a couple years ago and it was Lindsey's turn to show her stuff. I wasn't sure how she would do since in true Lindsey fashion she only crammed the night before.
Watching spelling bees are so hard because you feel so bad for every kid who gets out. Every time Lindsey would spell a word I would hold my breath until she got to the end. She had to spell some pretty hard words and it was a killer on the heart. In the end she got out on the word "supremacy" She started out with a "c" quickly changed it to an "s" then spelled the word right. Even though she spelled the word right you can't start out wrong and change it so she was out. It was a bummer to end that way, but we were SO proud of her and she was proud of herself. She ended up in fourth place out of 36 finalists in her grade of 150 kids. Not bad. Not bad at all.

Good job! Carter didn't even make it in this year after winning last year without ever looking at the list. He got too complacent and thought he didn't really need to study the list. He missed the word "quench" because he thought they said, "quinch". What the heck is a quinch?
Yeah, what's a quinch? You don't think about those things when you're on the spot. The gym was quiet and there were tons of parents and grandparents watching. It's a wonder any of the kids survived.
YAY for Lindsay. It's a tough world. I've had kids of my own try and not quite make it...or come in 2nd after their best friend won! It's a heartbreaker....but also a learning experience. I always felt like I needed a treat afterward..just for coming and surviving it with them =O)
